Discover the Ancient Greek Culture (Philosophy, Arts, Languages, Theatre)
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a theoretical background about life in ancient Greece and to bring them through an experiential way and various activities in contact with the values of the ancient Greek civilization which have largely constituted and are still one of the main bases of today's European culture. It complies fully with the Erasmus+ (Erasmus Plus) European criteria for mobility grants. We provide full modules for preparation, monitoring and validation.
Overview
In this 6-day course –with the option to extend or to shorten it or even to be structured tailor made– which is implemented by experienced and specialized educators, the participants will learn about the ancient greek culture and civilization
– Ancient Greek mythology: Gods, Goddesses and the creation of the world (presentation / visit to the Acropolis Museum where we understand about the subject through relevant exhibits / such as the Parthenon sculptures).
– The Sea is our life (presentation, visit to the Maritime Museum of Piraeus / day trip to Sounio / corresponding taste experience with traditional seafood products
– Living in Ancient Greece (presentation, visit to the ancient market / experiential activity / simulation – taste experience of ancient Greece)
– We are philosophizing … (presentation for Socrates, Plato, Aristotle / visit to the ancient market / the archaeological site of Akadimia Platonos and the corresponding digital museum)
– Ancient Athens: The birthplace of the Republic (presentation, visit, Pnyka and Kerameikos where Pericles gave pronounced (5th century, b.c.) his famous speech – hymn to Democracy: In name it is called a democracy, because it governs not for the few but for the many; but while, in terms of legal rights, equality is shared by all in relation to their private affairs, nonetheless, regarding recognition by the state, an individual receives preference for public office not by rotation, but from his own merit, based on the distinction he has achieved in some field;
– Theater means Culture and Education (presentation, visit to the ancient theaters of Dionysos and Herodion, experiential activity)
Scope
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a theoretical background about life in ancient Greece and to bring them through an experiential way and various activities in contact with the values of the ancient Greek civilization which have largely constituted and are still one of the main bases of today’s European culture. This knowledge will be valuable to participants in various cognitive fields –history, culture, languages, philosophy, social and political education, theatrical studies…– so that they will be capable through appropriate approaches to incorporate it in their lessons according to the phase of the educational process and their students’ needs. Moreover, the experiential way this program is structured will support them to organize similar original activities related to their own specific audience.
Methodology
The methodology is aimed at the active participation through interactive and experiential approaches combining theory and practice: presentations, team work, study and implementation of good practices, exercises in relevant ICT tools, discussions and sharing ideas, participation in a range of inside and outdoors activities in historical areas and museums.
Learning Outcome
In this course the participants will:
- acquire theoretical background about:
- countries exchanging experiences and approaches concerning the learning process
- understand Greek culture in order to experience the common cultural heritage of European community and strengthen the consciousness of European citizenship
- have the opportunity to visit Greek museums and important historical points of Athens, destinations combined with the educational aims of the course.
Location
The course takes place at the School Life and Education Museum, known for its vast variety of educational programs and cultural activities.
The Museum is in the center of Athens, in the Plaka neighborhood, under the Acropolis, and offers the opportunity for cultural trips and visits to the monuments and archaeological sites of Athens, as well as opportunities for sightseeing in the city’s everyday life.

The learning materials consists of presentations and support material and will be available online in English.
The cost includes the learning material and the certificates: Certificate of completion, Europass Certificate Supplement, Europass Mobility.
